The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has reaffirmed his country's support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara in response to a written question from Basque deputy Jon Iñarritu of the EH-Bildu party.
Albares emphasized that Spain's position on the Sahara is in full compliance with international law, as previously stated by the Prime Minister in his September 2023 address to the United Nations General Assembly.
In his speech, Pedro Sánchez called for a "politically acceptable solution for both parties" and overlooked the "right to self-determination of the people of the Sahara" and the "organization of a referendum" in the Sahara.
Albares indicated that Spain's position was articulated in the joint statement adopted on April 7, 2022, during the meeting between King Mohammed VI of Morocco and Pedro Sánchez, as well as in the declaration of February 2, 2023, released at the end of 2023 following the 12th High-Level Meeting between Spain and Morocco held in Rabat.
The joint statement of April 7, 2022, states that "Spain considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as the most serious, credible, and realistic basis for resolving this dispute."
Albares' reaffirmation of Spain's support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative comes in the wake of Algeria canceling the visit of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs to Algiers.
