Bucharest, March 12, 2024 - Controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have been once again placed in detention in Romania under European arrest warrants issued by the British authorities. The charges relate to alleged sexual offenses committed in the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2015.
According to a statement from the Romanian police, the two men were arrested on Monday evening at their residence in Bucharest, where they were already under judicial control for a separate case of human trafficking. The European arrest warrants issued by the British judicial authorities concern sexual offenses and the exploitation of individuals on British territory.
The communication team of the Tate brothers stated in a release that these accusations, dating back to 2012-2015 and falling under the jurisdiction of the Westminster court, were initially dismissed in 2017-2019. However, they have recently resurfaced, prompting a disconcerting reactivation of the proceedings.
The Tate brothers, Andrew, a 37-year-old former kickboxing world champion, and Tristan, 35, were brought before the prosecutor of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, who ordered their detention for an initial period of 24 hours. The Court of Appeal is expected to rule later in the day on the extension of this detention.
McCue Jury & Partners law firm, representing four British women accusing Andrew Tate of rape and serious physical and sexual assaults during the same period as the charges issued, welcomed the arrest. They had previously urged the British police to swiftly request a warrant for Tate's extradition, fearing he might attempt to flee Romania.
In a statement, the Tate brothers categorically denied the new British accusations, expressing their deep disappointment at the resurrection of such allegations without new substantial evidence, years after dismissal by the British Crown Prosecution Service.
Andrew Tate, known for his masculinist views and misogynistic statements, was previously arrested in Romania in December 2022 on charges of rape and human trafficking in a separate case. He was released on bail in August of the following year after several months in detention.
The Tate brothers are currently awaiting trial in Romania for an organized human trafficking case. They are accused of exploiting multiple women by trapping them through the 'loverboy' method, forcing them into producing pornographic films through acts of physical violence and psychological coercion.
Matthew Jury, managing partner of McCue Jury & Partners, hailed the arrest as a welcome development, highlighting concerns about Tate's possible attempt to escape. The masculinist influencer, followed by millions of internet users, is also banned from several social media platforms due to his misogynistic remarks, earning him the nickname "king of toxic masculinity".
