The threat of a new nuclear accident looms over Ukraine, evoking painful memories of Chernobyl. This time, the target is the Zaporiijia facility, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which has been targeted in a drone attack.
Zaporijja Nuclear Power Plant was struck by drone attacks on Monday, April 8th. The details of the attack remain unclear as Moscow and Kiev exchange accusations.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed damage to one of the six reactors. According to the agency, this is a "serious incident" that could "compromise the integrity of the reactor containment system," although the risk of an accident is being dismissed.

IAEA Director, Mario Grossi, condemned the attack, stating that it "significantly increases the risk of a major nuclear accident," and urged military authorities to protect nuclear facilities.
The Russian atomic energy agency Rosatom reported that one of the drones caused three injuries, hitting the central canteen. The agency denounced the incident as an "escalation," and as a "serious incident potentially compromising the integrity of the reactor containment structure."
Zaporiijia Nuclear Power Plant, under the control of the Russian military and subject to discussions between Moscow and Kiev for the past two years, has been the scene of mutual accusations. This situation underscores the urgent need for dialogue between the two parties to prevent a "nuclear catastrophe."
