The National Office of Railways (ONCF) has declared its intention to increase the proportion of clean energy in the operation of its trains to 90% by 2024, continuing the energy transition initiated in January 2022 with the introduction of wind energy to power 25% of its trains. Details.
According to a statement from the ONCF, this transition is part of the National Energy Strategy, carried out under the direction of King Mohammed VI. This strategy aims to accelerate the use of renewable energy in Morocco to enhance energy sovereignty, reduce costs, and position the country towards a low-carbon economy, reaching over 52% by 2030. In doing so, Morocco positions itself as one of the most committed emerging countries in the development of wind and solar energy.
The statement emphasizes that the ONCF, in line with its energy policy, is committed to greening and eliminating carbon from all its activities to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.
In a context of satisfaction with the choices made, generating undeniable benefits on economic, social, and environmental fronts, the ONCF continues to initiate and promote preventive environmental initiatives. These include the issuance of progressive certifications for railway sites in accordance with ISO 14001 and 50001 standards, the systematic implementation of impact studies for major projects, annual evaluation of carbon footprint, adoption of an environmental management system, and the use of alternative solar energy in stations, buildings, and more.
In January 2024, the ONCF also received confirmation of the successful issuance of green certificates issued in July 2022, valued at 1 billion dirhams.
The Bureau emphasizes that this achievement confirms the alignment of the ONCF with the framework of green obligations presented before its publication, while highlighting its compliance with the best international standards for sustainable low-carbon transportation.
The ONCF insists that although the railway is inherently an environmentally friendly means of transportation, its commitment to continuous improvement of its carbon footprint remains, aiming for sustainable mobility in service to society and the planet.
